TECHNART 2015 − Catania, April 27 - 30, 2015
Venue and travel information
Catania is the second most populated city of Sicily. It is located at the foot of Etna - the highest active volcano in Europe - and on the Ionian Sea coast.
The rich history and culture of the town is due to different occupations of Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Svevians, Aragonites, Angiò and Spanish, bringing with them their uses and knowledge inherited from Catania. Monuments and churches present in the city are the result of these different cultures. The city centre has been inserted in the World Heritage list of UNESCO and many important monuments can be visited.
Etna Mountain and beautiful nearby towns (Acitrezza, Aci Castello, Taormina) are easily reachable by several buses departing from the squares near the railway station.
Participants are recommended to reach the international airport in Catania (CTA) which is well connected with the main European airports (London, Paris, Bruxelles, Munich, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Zurich, etc.) as well from the airports of Rome and Milan by several daily flights and from other many Italian airports.
The centre of Catania can be reached from the international airport in about 20 minutes by Taxi or public transport (Alibus number 457). The ticket fare is 20,00 € for the Taxi and 1,50 € for the Alibus 457 respectively.
The TECHNART 2105 conference venue will be the "Refettorio" room at the Benedectine Monastery located in Piazza Dante (Dante square) in downtown of Catania. The Monatery is located 10 minutes walking from Piazza Stesicoro (Stesicoro square) and Piazza Duomo (Cathedral square), the two main square of the historical Etnea street (Via Etnea) in the centre of Catania. The monastery is a late baroque monument and one of the biggest Benedictine monastery in Europe. The construction of the building started in 1500 and has continued until today. It is an example of architectonical integration of different styles through different epochs. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the present it hosts the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania.
